"At Specialized, building bikes isn't a job. It's a full-bore, hardcore religion. A religion that's helped us evolve as a company and as riders over the last 20 years. To some, our obsession may seem a little sick in the head. But then, those people probably don't ride. They don't understand that, to be the best at something, you need to be a fanatic. And believe us, there's plenty of those wandering around our hallways. People like our product designers, who pursue innovations like they were well-hidden single tracks. Or the masochistic group down in R&D, who probably have more scar tissue than the entire NHL combined. Even our founder, Mike Sinyard, has been known to cancel meetings just so he could spend more time on the trail. Weird? Not to us. We started Specialized for two major reasons: Number one: We love the sport. Number two: We want to build products that help people like you enjoy the sport as much as we do. Period."
Specialized is the United State's fourth-largest maker of high-end bicycles and a leading innovator in the bicycle industry, consistently striving to create new and better bicycle technologies. In 1981, Specialized revolutionized the biking industry by introducing mountain bikes to the general public. The mountain bike Specialized sold in 1981, the StumpJumper, was such an important and groundbreaking product that an original model is on display in the Smithsonian Institute. Since 1981, Specialized has not backed off from its company motto, "Innovate or Die." The company, led by founder and CEO Mike Sinyard, has continued to create and introduce cutting-edge bicycle products such as lightweight helmets, physician-designed bicycle seats, a three-spoke wheel designed to cut bike racers' times, and bike frames made of high-tech materials. A minority share in the company was acquired by Merida, the Taiwan-based bicycle manufacturer in 2001.

Ignaz Schwinn, with his partner Adolph Arnold, incorporated "Arnold, Schwinn & Company" on October 22, 1895. Within a few short years of its creation, the company became an acknowledged technical and quality leader of the bicycle industry.
More than 100 years later, Schwinn has become an American icon and built some of the best-known and best-loved bicycles of all time, including the Aerocycle, Paramount, Phantom, Varsity, Sting-Ray, Krate, Homegrown and more. A world leader in technology and fabrication, Schwinn has been an indispensable player in revolutionizing bicycling around the world.
BMX, a popular youth sport of millions of riders can trace its roots directly to Schwinn, with the first BMX riders taking to the track on modified Sting-Rays in the mid-1960s.
However, Schwinn was delayed in entering the mountain bike market - one of the trends that would see explosive growth starting in the late-1980s. That coupled with some other misfires sent the then family-owned company into bankruptcy in 1993. One year later in 1994, Schwinn moved from its Chicago roots to the bike-Mecca of Boulder, Colorado under new management. Schwinn regained its strength, grabbing some of the best talent in the industry and giving the company a much-needed shot in the arm of youthful exuberance. Accolades for Schwinn's revitalized product line rolled in.
In 1998, Schwinn joined forces with another leader, GT Bicycles, and formed the Schwinn/GT Corporation. A force in bike technology, innovation and product development, Schwinn/GT Corporation became the dominant force in bikes and accessories through the independent bicycle dealer channel. However, Schwinn/GT also met their share of challenges, eventually filing for bankruptcy in Denver in 2001.
In 2001, Pacific Cycle purchased the Schwinn/GT Corporation, and united the two brands with the company's other quality lines like Mongoose, Mongoose Pro, Roadmaster and Pacific.
Paired with these product lines and under new management, Schwinn moved into mass retailers in 2002, effectively making high-quality Schwinn products available where Americans shop most. Schwinn also carries on the winning tradition of sponsoring world-class athletes by featuring two-time X-Games Gold Medallist dirt jump king, TJ Lavin.
In 2004, Dorel Industries, Inc., a global consumer products company, purchased Pacific Cycle. Pacific Cycle now operates as a division of Dorel, and its headquarters remains in Madison, Wisconsin, USA.
Moving forward, Schwinn continues to lead the industry with innovative new bikes such as the proprietary Iso-Drive mountain bikes, Super Sport flat-bar road bikes and ergonomically-superior Sierra and Voyager comfort bikes joining the heritage-inspired Cruisers, trail-conquering BMX and kid-tough juvenile bikes that has made Schwinn a favorite of families for generations.

Attention People of Earth:
Surly designs and produces stuff for people who ride bikes, and have been doing so since 1998. Since the beginning they have aimed to produce the kind of stuff they’d like to ride, stuff that’s fun, practical, affordable, and versatile. All their frames are made of their own 4130 cro-moly steel because steel is responsive, durable, inexpensive and in many cases repairable.
They now offer several complete bikes, and continue to offer up frames and components which appeal most readily to bike nerds like us, items such as the Big Dummy cargo frame/bike, cro-moly Racks, and Dingle cogs, things which are designed very well and are recommended by people who spend their lives on bikes. Much of this stuff isn’t for everybody, and that’s O.K. by them. They, like many of you, recognize that the sound and fury of flashy graphics or expensive frame materials is far less important than quality of the design. Ride a Surly and you’ll see what they mean.
Their continuing mission is to design and offer for sale quality bike stuff for people who ride a lot, who appreciate educated value, who demand more from their bikes, and who do not want to settle for so-called comfort bikes or ultra expensive race machines that look better than they ride. So ladies and gentlemen, please return your tray tables and seat backs to their upright and locked positions, and fasten your safety belts because things get bumpy off the beaten path, and that is where you’ll find Surly.
Surly: always forward, never straight.

It started as a quest. A group of world class athletes looking for a frame that would allow them to perform at their best. A frame that that had it all - light weight for climbing, superior lateral stiffness and torsional rigidity for efficiency, vertical compliance for comfort and race inspired geometry for fit and handling that would be second to none. Unfortunately, bikes like that weren't readily available.
There was a need for a company that could design and build the same world class framesets that were capable of giving elite athlete a competitive advantage and offer those same, identical frames to the amateur athlete or serious enthusiast. That's how Blue Competition Cycles got its start.
And have they met their goal? You be the judge. In just three short years, the athletes riding Blue have won nearly every major road race in North America. Their bikes have helped riders win NRC Championships as well as multiple national championships in numerous countries on the road, in time trials, and in the velodrome. They built frames that have carried their riders to the podiums of UCI and ITU World Cup races. They've won UCI cyclocross races, Xterra Championships and a 24 hour MTB US National Championship. They have raced successfully in UCI World Championships and the Olympics. They've helped to bring home the Gold at Pam Am Games time trial and Pan Am Games road race (twice). They've won numerous national championships in triathlon - from juniors to elites. They have won an ITU Duathlon World Championship. And there's been medals of every color - including gold - at the ITU Triathlon World Championships as well. And they’re only getting started... |

GT HISTORY 101
For those of you who flunked history, GT’s story is simple: speed, speed and even more speed. From GT’s namesake Gary Turner designing one of the first BMX race bikes in 1973 to our modern carbon fiber creations that redefine fast-as-hell, we’ve built a long legacy of racing and winning, yet never taking ourselves too seriously. As a company, we’re 36 going on 18. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
1973
Gary’s son gets addicted to BMX racing. But the bikes are heavy and Gary, who cut his teeth welding drag racing cars, knows there’s a better way. He makes the first frame so his kid can start crushing it on the So Cal circuit. Gosh, thanks, Pop.
1974–1980
Richard Long and Gary team up and GT is born. Richard is the business guy, selling frames, sponsoring riders and generally doing his level best to become the biggest name in BMX. And Gary? He’s making it possible with the most innovative frames in the business.
1981–1986
GT owns the BMX world with more wins, more riders and more clout than any other. So much so the company earns the nickname “The Firm.” Cool note: Cycling legend Hans Rey signs with GT in 1986 – 23 years and counting.
1987–1994
BMX wanes but mountain biking takes off. And, no surprise, GT leads the way. Mountain biking legends like Juli Furtado, Nicolas Vouilloz and Rishi Grewal come on board to fly the colors – and win big.
1995–1998
GT officially becomes criminally fast when the UCI bans nearly every feature designed for the Project ‘96 bikes (Insert proud smirk here). On the dirty side, 4-bar linkage bursts on to the scene and the LTS sports the infamous Fox ALPS 5. But the good times come with a loss. Richard Long is killed in a motorcycle accident on his way up to the ’96 NORBA Championships in Big Bear.
1999–2002
A whole new era of mountain innovation (and winning results) dawns. GT introduces i-Drive® suspension to rave reviews and the LOBO DH bike hits the slopes. Suspended bikes make up 80% of the models over $1000. Oh yeah, and the Saturn and Lotto Pro Cycling teams take turns riding GT road bikes over a couple seasons.
2003–2006
The innovation continues as the Ruckus i-Drive® becomes the new standard in free riding – until, of course, the i-Drive® 7 in 2007. Other notable models include the IDXC and the first production gearbox design, the IT-1.
2007–2009
GT is back on the podium! Brian Lopes is the 2007 4x World Champion. In 2008, Burry Stander becomes the U23 XC World Champion. In the inaugural Olympics for BMX race, Mike Day takes home silver; Jill Kintner, bronze. In 2009, Mick Hannah podiums (again and again) on the ground-breaking Fury carbon downhill bike. |
